Have you ever heard the saying "Like water off a duck's back?" Have you ever wondered why one would say such a quirky line? What exactly does it matter if there is water on or off a duck's back?
There are people today that are up to no good. They attempt to say hurtful things out of ignorance or just plain stupidity. For whatever reason they are out to do no good but to destroy via lies and deceit. They will say things about you to your face, or if they be a coward, they will say things behind your back.
The saying, "Like water off a duck's back" applies to such situations. Christians should already be practicing this saying and it would do well for the rest of society to do the same as well. The saying translated simply means, when someone says something stupid, hurtful, ignorant and it is done to hurt you, defame you or destroy you, you should simply let it go. Just let it go, let it roll right off.
I remember as a little kid, many of us would play in the neighborhood and as boys, we would get into a battle of words. The saying back then that was popular was, "I am the rubber you are the glue, whatever you say, bounces off me and sticks to you." Well, we are not asking for their words to bounce back in their face, even though you might have that temptation but we are saying...just let them go.
How does the water roll off a duck's back?
Duck's have what is called Glandular oil. When they preen their feathers, the oil covers their feathers from head to toe. Then, when they begin to glide thru the water, the water that hits their feathers simply rolls right off their back. This enables them to stay in the water for long periods of time. Without that oil, the duck's feathers would quickly be saturated by the water and the duck would drown.
As Christians we can be assured of one thing. When we follow Christ, we become anointed by HIS oil. That oil, like the oil that ran down Aaron's beard, is an anointing upon our lives. God gives us the ability to brush aside the fiery darts of the wicked, the angry words of the ignorant, the attempted destruction's of the filthy ragged self-righteous. With God on our side, who can be against us. Who can stand against the One who made the heaven's and the earth, the One who made fire come down from Heaven and the One, who while walking on this earth in a fleshy robe, brushed aside evil by saying "Get thee behind me Satan!"
Thank God for that anointing. Thank God that His precious hand helps guide us and keep us from the evil one. Thank God for His wisdom allowing us to know that the words of the wicked will fall short of us as long as we are in His precious arms.
Like water off a duck's back, I choose to let the words roll right off.
