We pray and sing “Keep me near the cross.” But what does it really mean to be near the cross when Jesus was crucified? I am not talking about a literal physical presence, but I am referring to a spiritual position. I am talking about a special relationship to Jesus Christ. Today we are going to consider these four people who stood near the cross, when Jesus was crucified, and try to understand what it meant to them to be near the cross.

The act of Pilate delivering the Lamb of God into the hands of those who was to carry out the sacrificial act at Calvary meant the end of the law and its sacrificial acts. The old priesthood came to an end, the sons of Aaron can close the doors of the temple, the types and shadows have done their duty, now that the real Lamb has appeared.

Do you know what time it is? Many people are living in their own little fairy tale world and they don’t know what’s going on spiritually. In the sense that they are not living in the real spiritual world. They don’t recognize what’s going on and what is going to happen in this world and perhaps, in their own lives. They need a wake up call of some kind.

Certain sayings of our Lord are marked out as of special importance by the term “first.” They tell us some of the things that He set above all others. The word ‘first’ was used many times by our Lord. We will discuss some of those ‘firsts’ in this study. We will start by the most important one of all.
